If your laundry comes out of the wash smelling less-than-fresh, your washing machine might be the real culprit. Over time, detergent buildup, hard water minerals, and mildew can turn your trusty washer into a breeding ground for bacteria and bad smells.
The good news? With just a few natural ingredients and a little time, you can deep-clean your washing machine and get it smelling fresh again. Here's how—and why you should do it regularly.
🧼 Why Clean Your Washer?
-
Removes odor-causing grime and bacteria
-
Keeps laundry smelling fresh
-
Helps your machine run better and last longer
-
Prevents skin irritation from detergent buildup
🛠 What You’ll Need:
-
White vinegar
-
Baking soda
-
Microfiber cloth
-
Old toothbrush
-
(Optional) Essential oils
🧽 Step-by-Step:
1. Clean the detergent drawer:
Remove, soak, and scrub with warm soapy water. Let it dry.
2. Wipe the door seal (front-loaders):
Use a vinegar-damp cloth and toothbrush to clean inside folds. Add tea tree oil to kill mildew.
3. Run a hot cycle with vinegar:
Add 2 cups of white vinegar to the drum. Run a hot, empty cycle.
4. Run another cycle with baking soda:
Add ½ cup of baking soda to the drum. Run another hot cycle to deodorize.
5. Wipe down the exterior & check the filter:
Clean the outside and empty the drain filter if needed.
6. Keep it fresh:
Leave the door open after each wash and clean monthly.
